THE FORGOTTEN CELLAR OF OLD OLIM MADEIRA
This collection was recently discovered in a cellar on the east side of Madeira Island, in Santa Cruz. The forgotten cellar contained ten barrels which were filled up in the mid-nineteenth century and never topped up. Over time, the Madeiras in these casks concentrated under the influence of the sub-tropical climate. When discovered, samples were presented to Christie’s. Each wine had such a beautiful concentration and complex taste that they easily count among the best Madeiras Christie’s Specialist Edwin Vos had have tasted. All wines were hand-bottled and shipped to New York especially for this auction. A unique opportunity to acquire old and rare Madeira’s which have spent almost a century and half in cask.

Level Into neck

Bottled direct from cask in 2019. Unfiltered.
Fresh salty nose, passion fruit and dried banana leaves intense sweet character. Different appearance from the 1867. Fine sweet taste of passion fruit with a salty touch. Very concentrated, a suave rich mouthfeel of sweet sun-ripened tropical fruit prevails with a fine acidity peeking through the impressive mid palate. So much going on here too, strong multiflavored. With time these will further unfold their aromas. Compared to the more brisk and direct 1867, this is also has a strong expression but more gentle personality.
