Frequently asked questions

The first step to selling with Christie’s is to submit up to three images and additional information per item to our complimentary online auction estimate service. Auction estimates will be provided for items for which Christie’s has a category of sale and which meet our minimum consignment value.

As Christie's sells art from the secondary market only, we are not able to consign work from individual artists or their representatives. The secondary market constitutes galleries, dealers, or previous owners of works for which Christie's has a market. The primary market, which is defined as the artists or producers of objects themselves, is not engaged by Christie's as a source of consignment.
Christie's is pleased to offer provisional auction estimates free of charge for items which we consider appropriate for auction. We regret that we do not provide auction estimates for items which are of a type or value that is typically not sold in Christie’s auctions.
For this service, our specialists require the following information for each item: - Clear colour images (front, back and detail of signature or maker’s mark) - A detailed description including medium/material and dimensions - Provenance (the history of the item and how it was acquired) - Artist or Maker (if known)

If you submit your item(s) for review with us you are under no obligation to sell with Christie's.

We ask that you submit one to six items per form, with a maximum request of six total items per week. Should the amount of items you wish to submit exceed this limit, then we recommend that you contact Estates, Appraisals & Valuation Services.
Please email a list of the wines you would like considered, along with provenance and storage information, to wine@christies.com.

Please expect a response within 3–4 weeks. We will carefully review your submission, and, if your item is suitable for a Christie’s sale, will then provide an estimate and recommendations on the best way to sell it.

Property submitted to this service must be owned outright by the party seeking an estimate of value.

Before consigning your item(s), we will contact you to discuss all terms and conditions. Christie’s charges a single Seller’s Commission rate for the services we provide. It is calculated on each item as a fixed percentage based on the eventual hammer price at auction. This rate includes marketing costs and insurance cover (except for sales of wine, where marketing and insurance are charged separately). If your item sells for over the high estimate we agree with you, there will also be an additional 2% Performance Commission fee.

Christie's does not provide authentication services.
Christie’s does not have a restoration service and therefore we are unable to provide estimates for damaged property or repairs.
Should you have authentication or appraisal paperwork, please feel free to submit these documents along with your request, however Christie's does not require this information prior to the initial review.
Please visit Christie's Department Directory to review the categories Christie's offers for sale.

Furthermore, Christie's auction estimates are intended solely for the use of the owner of the property and only for the purpose of considering whether to consign the property to Christie's. It may not be used by the owner for any other purpose, or by any third party for any purpose whatsoever, nor may it be published.

This will be an amount that we both agree we will not sell your item below during the auction. This amount must be equal to, or lower than the low estimate, and will not be published.
