Dr Ursul Berger has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Marianne Farenholtz (1896-1990) was married to the industrial Wilhelm Farenholtz, a well known commodity trader from Magdeburg. The couple were eclectic in their artistic interests; as well as collecting modern art, they also patronised writers such as Stefan George and were avid supporters of the Friedrich Hölderlin Society. Marianne and Wilhelm were also close friends with Schmidt-Rottluff, Heckel, Nolde, and Georg Kolbe, who executed the present bust of Marianne in 1930.
