Francis Newton Souza frequently masked and disfigured the visages of his subjects manipulating features or eliminating them all together. In his drawings, Souza maintains an economy of line that expertly summarizes the human form in its most elemental form. Souza painted a number of these political and/or religious portraits during the late 1950s and early 1960s as is evident in lot 45 in this sale.
