drypoint, circa 1893, on Vanderley laid paper, a delicate impression with strong plate tone, Breeskin's only state, signed in pencil, annotated 'état,' with full margins (deckle along all sides), minor surface soiling, occasional soft handling and printing creases, a few stray ink fingerprints in the margins, a few areas of pale staining in the margins, pinholes in the margins at the four image corners, minute glue remains at the extreme lower left and right margin corners, otherwise in good condition

The sketch plate has a long history in printmaking. In the tradition of Rembrandt and others, Cassatt maintained a lighthearted approach to her drypoints, even while producing her major color prints (the present lot is dated to around the same time period as Gathering Fruit [see lots 55 and 56]).
