Property from the Estate of Pierre-Noël Matisse Christie's is privileged to offer a select group of paintings, works on paper and sculpture by Henri Matisse from the Estate of Pierre-Noël Matisse in the fall Impressionist and Modern Art sales in New York. Pierre-Noël Matisse, grandson of Henri Matisse, inherited an encyclopedic and extraordinary collection of works--not only by Matisse but by a pantheon of 20th Century masters--from his prodigious parents Pierre Matisse and Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp. This formidable family must have provided a fascinating childhood. While his father Pierre Matisse is considered one of the most influential dealers of the 20th Century, having introduced artists such as Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti and Jean Dubuffet to America, his mother "Teeny" Duchamp led an adventurous and offbeat life having later married the artist Marcel Duchamp. This rare assortment of works offers an intimate glimpse into the prolific and varied oeuvre of Henri Matisse with five paintings (see lots 320, 328, 360, 383 and 448), one sculpture (see lot 380) and fourteen works on paper (see lots 101-114 in the Works on Paper sale) by the artist. The works range from rare pre-fauve paintings that demonstrate his mastery of color and distinctive gestural brushwork to his iconic odalisques and masterful portraiture in a range of media to a striking self-portrait that truly encapsulates the spirit of the artist.
