A MAGNIFICENT URHOBO MALE FIGURE
Nigeria, circa 1875
(Edjo re akare), the monumental male figure seated on a circular base, the legs parted with prominent sex, the hands resting on the knees, the powerful head with six vertical keloids in relief on the forehead and temples (ewu), carved teeth in the open hollowed mouth, carved beaded insignia about the broad shoulders and across the abdomen, massive bracelet on each wrist, and similar anklets, the powerful arched back with deeply grooved spine, remains of cylindrical projection to the top of the head, the coiffure dressed with two pointed pendants over the nape of the neck, extensive traces of chalk (orhe).
