Each oblong and with gadrooned rim, the cover with detachable snake loop and foliage handle, the cover engraved with a coat-of-arms, the dishes engraved inside with a crest and beneath with an inscription, marked on side of dish and cover

The inscription reads 'TO DAVID LYON ESQR by the unanimous vote of a General Court on the 16th October 1804 in grateful Testimony of his eminent Services in the Direction of the Important Concerns of The WEST INDIA DOCK COMPANY'
The arms are those of Lyon quartering Ochterlony, Read and another, for David Lyon M.P., son of David Lyon (d.1827) of Portland Place, London and his wife Isabella, eldest daughter of John Read of Cairney, Forfarshire.
The West India Docks were built on the Isle of Dogs following the West India Docks Act of 1799. The Prime Minister William Pitt laid the foundation stone in 1800 and they opened in 1802. (4)
