The present work is undoubtedly a portrait of Mathilde Salle, the celebrated dancer from the Paris Opera and friend of Degas. She appears in other works by the artist, including two drawings (Lemoisne nos. 866 and 882) and two sculptures (Pingeot nos. 69 and 70). The work shown here is, apart from the medium (the artist almost completely abandoned the use of oil paint around 1892) characteristic of his work of the 1890s. Like most of Degas' models during this period, Mathilde Salle was part of his close circle of friends. With brisk brushstrokes and warm tones, Degas captured his friend's personality with striking vitality, offering the viewer a movingly intimate portrait.
