This early work is a unique example of Julie Mehretu's hand-dipped resin paintings. Created in 1997, it dates to a period in which the artist used large vats of resin to further complicate her multi-layered, multi-meaninged paintings. A few years later, she would turn to the use of a spray-gun to give her paintings an allover, even sheen, but the present work displays the artist's hand and a sense of craft that were crucial in forming her now signature style.
