Newton made this study of Jenny Kapitan, a favourite model at the time who became a fashion editor, in a room in the Pension Dorian in Berlin. The dark, baroque décor so redolent of the typical Berlin interiors that Newton remembered from his childhood had an added element of history that piqued the photographer's curiosity. For this hotel had served during the war as a bordello for the upper ranks of the Nazi party -- the notorious 'Salon Kitty'.
