On September 14, 1923 Bellows was sent by the New York Evening Journal to capture the bout between heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey and the Argentine fighter Luis Firpo. Bellows portrayed the riveting moment when Firpo knocked Dempsey out of the ring, and included a small self-portrait of himself as a spectator in the lower left corner. This rich, sparkling impression is signed by the artist, his printer Bolton Brown and both of the iconic boxers.
