Whistler meticulously printed all the impressions of the First Venice Set, carefully inking and wiping the plates to vary the tonal effects. He annotated proofs that particularly pleased him with an 'o' next to his butterfly signature, as he did on this impression. According to an inscription on the reverse by noted dealer Frederick Keppel, 'this is the identical proof which Whistler exhibited in London when the Venice Etchings were first publicly shown.' This impression was in the collections of famed J.M.W. Turner scholar W.G. Rawlinson and eminent collector Albert W. Scholle.
