Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1990(12) "On its 10th birthday, maturing nicely, bouquet evolving well but more bottle-age essential. Consistently good notes since, four recently, which can be summed up as follows: very deep, virtually opaque core, rich, velvety, still youthful; bouquet slow to open but developing fragrant spiciness, touch of cedar and typical 'medicinal' whiff; medium sweet, perfect weight (12.5 good flavour, balance, length and excellent finish. A classic Lafite. Last tasted March 2000 ***(**) 2010 - 2030" M.B. Château Latour--Vintage 1990(12) "A wonderful note in Dec 2003 alongside Lafite, both showing well, the Latour opaque and intense, lovely rich fruit, sweet, perfect extract, tannin and acidity. Most recently: less deep, more mature, sweeter and softer than the '89, developing well" M.B. Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1990(12) Small stickers on labels, one pen-marked. Not in original wooden case "Most recently, an impériale: deep, maturing more quickly than the '89' rich, complete, harmonious bouquet; sweet, soft, fleshy, spicy, with a dry finish. Very good, very enjoyable" M.B. Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1990(12) "Most recently: medium, lovely colour; bouquet very forthcoming, harmonious, soft, rich; curious, very distinctive, 'old autumn leaves' unmistakably Graves flavour. Nice wine. Last tasted Oct 2005 ***(*) Now - 2015" M.B. Château Pétrus--Vintage 1990 U.S. integrated slip labels. In "HKDNP" import stamped original wooden case(12) "1990 is an extraordinarily rich, seamless wine with layers of flavour, and a finish that lasts for nearly 45 seconds. Although it is remarkably accessible because of its voluptuous texture, this wine has not begun to develop secondary nuances. It should hit its peak in 10-15 years, and last for three decades" Robert Parker

A NOTE ON THE 1990 VINTAGE

An excellent vintage with similar attributes to the 89 but certainly not an identical twin. January to March unusually warm and sunny, up to 25 degrees centrigrade on the 24th February, advancing vegetation. Beneficially rain in April followed by a very hot, dry and sunny May. The flowering was uneven and prolonged, satisfactory for the Merlots, less so for Cabernet Sauvignon. July was excessively hot, up to just short of 39 degrees centigrade on the 21st. This heat had a reverse effect, hindering maturation by impeding the rising of the sap. August was warm and dry. Unlike 1989 this did not deter the ripening, as a well-timed beneficial sprinkling of rain in September enabled the grapes to be harvested around mid-month. In general, the Merlots were in remarkable condition with some of the highest levels of sugar ever recorded. The later ripening Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were small and thick with a concerntration of juice and colouring matter M.B.
