This work would appear to be a long-term response to the many Picassos that Vaughan saw for the first time at the Victoria and Albert Museum's exhibition of Picasso and Matisse in 1946, which revived his interest in Picasso that had started in the 1930s, mainly based on illustrations in catalogues and magazines. At first sight, this geometrical figure seems rather outside Vaughan's usual range, but in fact it is an entirely successful adaptation of the cubist manner to his theme and sensibility.
