'Piper's King Penguin book on Romney Marsh celebrated his return to work in the South Coast, after the restricted access during the war. It is also an example of how thorough was his topographical knowledge, both in historical detail and precise observation. The drawings exemplify the qualities he had picked out in the text of British Romantic Artists (1942): the commitment to the particular, and to 'a sense of drama in atmosphere'' (D.F. Jenkins, op. cit., p. 114).
