Peter Meyer recalled his acquisition of this work, 'The gouache on the stairs was pinned to the wall in the Scott's flat ... opposite me, when we dined there. I rang the next morning and bought it. When I told Patrick Heron, he said "Clever old William"' (private correspondence).
