"I wanted to escape from the delimination of skin (whether the exclusive volumes of lead bodycases or the solid volumes of the bodyforms) and acknowledge the body as a place of transformation.
There was a lot of experimentation, but the Domains really got going when I realised I could describe the space of the body as a matrix formed from eight lengths of stainless steel in a reversal of the Greek pointing system, with rods resting on the internal surface of the body.
They are put together with a loose set of rules: one end of each T connection should always be on the original surface and the rods should be as normal to surface as possible.
As this work progressed the minimum member rule arose: to use the least amount of material necessary to convey the attitude of the body (while still allowing it to stand). The work achieved tension.
As with the Insiders, the Domain series is an attempt to separate the subtle from the material body, to abstract an attitude and expose it to light and space.
I see the Domain as a diagnostic instrument, both receiver and transmitter" (A. Gormley quoted at www.antonygormley.com).
