Jules Cavaillès began his career as a technical draughtsman before departing for Paris to study fine art. In 1925 he enrolled at the Academie Julian and soon thereafter began to exhibit at the various Parisian Salons. He was invited to participate at the Salon des Tuileries, and in 1936 organized the 14th exhibition of the Artistes de ce temps in the Petit-Palais. A prominent member of the group of artists 'La Realite Poetique,' Cavaillès' style is characterized by the juxtaposition of pure color, an interpretation of fauvist painting that was less interested in the Fauves search for intensity than a simple expression of joie de vivre.

The current scene depicts "La Salute," the crown jewel of 17th-century baroque architecture that dominates the Grand Canal, located directly across from the Piazza San Marco in Venice.
