Wanda de Guébriant has confirmed the authenticity of this drawing.

The present drawing of a pomegranate was executed by Matisse for Verve, the French art periodical founded by publisher Estafrios Tériade in 1937. The magazine, published between 1939 and 1960, was a quarterly review of arts and letters. Verve was lavishly designed and challenging in content. Its covers and interior pages featured works by a veritable promenade of well-known modern artists of the 20th century--Marc Chagall, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, and Matisse, among others.
