A SWISS PARCEL-GILT CUP FORMED AS A UNICORN
MAKER'S MARK OF SEBASTIAN FECHTER THE ELDER, BASEL, CIRCA 1685
On lobed oval base repoussé and chased with flowers, applied above with a salamander, the unicorn on his hind legs, the head detachable, stamped twice on base with owner's mark, marked on base

The ownership stamp on the base is that of the Stockalper family from the county of the Valais. This unicorn was probably made for Kaspar Jodok Stockalper the elder, a member of one of the most prominent regional families and Landeshauptmann (governor) from 1670 until 1678.
Sebastian Flechter specialized in animal-shaped cups. A cup in the form of a kid goat, which was also made for the Stockalper family, is now in the Historic Museum in Basel (inv. no. 1943.6, exhibition Schätze der Basler Goldschmiedekunst 1400-1989, 700 Jahre E.E Zunft zu Hausgenossen, Historical Museum of Basel, 20.5-2.10.1989, vol.II, p. 26, fig. 13) . In addition, he is also recorded as having made for the same family a model of a horse, now in a private collection.

Le sceau sur la base est celui de la famille Stockalper du Valais et cette licorne a probablement était faite pour Kaspar Jodok Stockalper dit "Le Grand", Landeshauptmann (gouverneur) de 1670 à 1678 et membre d'une des familles les plus influentes de la région.
Sebastian Fechter l'Ancien se spécialisa dans la fabrication d'animaux en argent et réalisa d'ailleurs pour le même commanditaire, un bouquetin conservé au Musée Historique de Bâle (inv. no. 1943.6, exposition Schätze der Basler Goldschmiedekunst 1400-1989, 700 Jahre E.E Zunft zu Hausgenossen, musée historique de Bâle, 20.5-2.10.1989, vol.II, p. 26, illustr. 13) et un cheval dans une collection privée.
