On oval base repoussé and chased with foliage and rock work, the galloping stag with detachable head and decorative collar, engraved on the reverse with initials AXE, with assay scrape
Welcome cups often adopted the form of game, particularly that of wild boar or deer. Deer-hunting remained, in many areas of Germany, the prerogative of the nobility. Often the animal was represented with a collar and, indeed, the royal archives make reference to such collars. This symbolized the domination of the landowner over nature as the animal would be fitted with the collar and then released on the nobleman's land for all to appreciate his power and authority.
