Suzy Parker became one of the most successful models of her era, immortalised through the lens of Richard Avedon. Born Cecilia Rena Anne Parker, this lively red-head was the younger sister of another celebrated model, Dorian Leigh (Elizabeth Dorian Leigh Parker). Susie was her father's nickname for the young Cecilia and she stuck with this name in her adult life, changing the spelling to Suzy. She became one of Avedon's favourite models. At once elegant and vivacious, her temperament perfectly matched his dynamic way of working on location in the 1950s and early 1960s. 'I was just lucky. Sheer luck. I was lucky to have been born with cheekbones,' she once declared, with unjustified modesty. (Gross, Model The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women, William Morrow and Co., 1995, p. 122)
