Jean-Louis Delaunay and Richard Riss have confirmed the authenticity of this work.
Sonia Delaunay, together with her husband, artist Robert Delaunay, made an indelible impression on the Paris art world when together they founded Orphism in 1913. A widely respected pioneer in the use of color and geometry in abstract painting, Delaunay worked prolifically in gouache on paper throughout her career. It is through the use of this medium that Delaunay's exploration of the rhythms and lyricism of color is clear.
In 1964 Delaunay became the first living female artist given a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre. In the catalogue he prepared for the event, Jean Cassou wrote that "the donation [of her works to the Louvre] constitutes an inestimable enrichment for the Musée Nationale d'Art Moderne, and confirms in a striking way...the place of the couple Robert and Sonia Delauney in the panorama of the spiritual creativity of our times" (S. Baron, Sonia Delaunay: The Life of an Artist, London, 1995, p. 168).
