A H Church, Precious Stones (1883) The earliest coloured gems - and still the most highly prized - were rubies, sapphires and emeralds. The ruby epitomises the boldest of colours, representing desire and passion. Burma, whose pure-red rubies are regarded as precious treasure, has remained the classical source for the finest quality rubies. The blue sapphire has as resplendent beauty that is associated with purity and chastity. Located in the Himalayas, the mines of Kashmir are renowned for the world's most desirable sapphires for they possess a velvety 'cornflower' blue. The emerald, dating from the time of the ancient Egyptians is revered as symbols of immortality and faith. The best are those that originate in Colombia and valued for their intensity and depth of colour, an especially rich green. The following three jewels are excellent specimens of these coveted gems. Lot 1705 (ruby), Lot 1706 (sapphire) and Lot 1707 (emerald) are bright, luminous sugarloaves whose natural hues remain highly attractive even in cabochon form. While the 10.89-carat Burmese ruby glows a-red, the Kashmir sapphire of 13.53 carats is illuminated like a blue globe with a lamp inside it. And at 12.66 carats, the Colombian emerald glints with a blue flame darting about in the depths of its green light. Combined with vivid saturation, these enchanting coloured gems are tantalising, like the sweetest bonbons - each displaying its own unique natural properties. Rare for their superior quality and tremendous weight, all three stones are indulgent, luscious treasures, that will prove irresistible to the gem connoisseur.
