The sitter was the son of John Bligh, 1st Earl of Darnley and his wife, Theodosia, Baroness Clifton. He succeeded his elder brother to the title in 1747 and devoted much time and money to extending Cobham Hall. A version of the portrait was sold at Sotheby's, London, 21 March 2002, lot 44, for $12,290.
