We are grateful to Sarah Faunce for confirming the authenticity of this work. She dates it to the mid- to late 1860's. It will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Courbet's paintings.
This work will be included by Jean Jacques Fernier in his supplement to the catalogue raisonné on the artist as 'Courbet et collaboration', on the basis that in his opinion Cherubino Pata may have assisted the artist in its execution.
