"I worked as a hospital porter at Hendon Cottage Hospital in north London from late April until early June 1960. The other porter, with whom I became friendly, was Tyeb Mehta. We had to do portering, bed moving, general maintainance and gardening, sharing a mess room with junior ward staff. He was supplementing his income as a painter and I was a conscientious objector architect doing part of my National Service. We both were a bit out of place. I remember larking about with Tyeb, one time with the garden hosepipes and another when cutting hedges with hand shears. We took it in turns to cut while the other shirked, as long as the clicking noises continued Matron thought we were both hard at work. I was about to get married at that time and Tyeb offered this painting to hang in our new flat." (Correspondence with Mr. E.K. Walker)
