With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial and raised steel hour markers in 1941 and its subsequent sale on 6 June 1942.
The watch offered here for the first time ever at auction does not only impress by its captivating aesthetics and excellent overall condition but equally by its technical complexity. In fact, it is fitted with the celebrated calibre 12''' SC movement with indirect centre seconds. This ébauche was the result of the collaboration between Victorin Piguet and Patek Philippe, where the centre seconds mechanism was ingeniously added to the existing 12'''120 "subsidiary seconds" movement.
The present watch is thought to be one of only three examples of reference 570 in stainless steel with indirect sweep centre seconds known to date. The nearly identical model is on permanent exhibition at the prestigious Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The third example from the series, featuring Arabic numerals, was sold in this saleroom on 11 May 2009, lot 159.
The large Calatrava model reference 570 was introduced into the market in 1938, featuring either subsidiary or sweep centre seconds. It was available in stainless steel, yellow, pink and white gold and platinum.
It is interesting to note that the stainless steel version of reference 570 features different case dimensions, e.g. a diameter of around 36.2 mm. and distance of 18 mm. between the lugs whereas the measurements of the precious metal cases are 35 mm. and 20 mm.
