The recipient of this tray, R.T. Russell Tomlinson, was born in Southbury, Connecticut in 1807. He began his career as a blacksmith specializing in carriage springs, a business which developed into the Tomlinson Spring and Axle Company. In addition to his service as president of the Naugatuck Railroad Company, commemorated in the present lot, he was elected to the General Assembly and State Senate, held various offices in the municipal government of Bridgeport, and acted as trustee for the Golden Hill Tribe of the Paugussett Indian Nation. He died in 1885.
