The tray shaped oval on circular feet, the field engraved with a bouquet of flowers and inscribed PRESENTED TO R.T. RUSSELL TOMLINSON ESQ. BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE NAUGATUCK RAIL ROAD CO. AS A TOKEN OF APPRECIATION OF HIS SERVICES WHILE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY 1869, marked, also marked on reverse 1427 3272, each goblet on circular foot with dentil border, the body with dentil band and foliate band centering oval cartouche monogrammed RRT, the interior gilt, each marked under base, also marked 1683 3656

The recipient of this tray, R.T. Russell Tomlinson, was born in Southbury, Connecticut in 1807. He began his career as a blacksmith specializing in carriage springs, a business which developed into the Tomlinson Spring and Axle Company. In addition to his service as president of the Naugatuck Railroad Company, commemorated in the present lot, he was elected to the General Assembly and State Senate, held various offices in the municipal government of Bridgeport, and acted as trustee for the Golden Hill Tribe of the Paugussett Indian Nation. He died in 1885.
