Known as both fruit and ice cream coolers, this form originated with English silver and was quickly adopted by European ceramics factories before being made in export porcelain. The shallow liner dishes sit above ice-filled main bodies to keep their contents cool. A very similar pair was exhibited in Philadelphians and the China Trade, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1984, and is illustrated by J.G. Lee in the catalogue, no. 178.
