Richard Riss has confirmed the authenticity of this watercolor.
The present work is a costume study for Les quatre saisons, an unrealized ballet choreographed by Leonide Massine. This series of studies is marked by colorful compositions that are essentially based on circles, parallel lines and curves, and are reminiscent of the bold fabrics and tapestries Delaunay designed. Besides her work for the theater and ballet, Delaunay also collaborated memorably with couturiers Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin and Jacques Heim, and made clothing for the wives of architects Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Erich Mendelsohn.
