Léon Leleux, the first owner of this painting, was the brother of the artists Adolphe and Armaud Leleux, genre and history painters in the mainstream 19th century tradition. Armaud was particularly drawn to Swiss scenes and his work can be found in museums in Geneva as well as Montauban, Paris and Toulouse. Adolphe was made Chevalier de la Legion d'Honeur in 1855 and his works can also be seen in museums in Paris, Antwerp and Dijon.
