Gerrit Benner holds a unique position in Dutch twentieth century art. He was a loner who refused to join any group of artists. He was hard working and sought his own way in the art world. His paintings show individualism in all its facets; his close bond with nature translated into landscapes, figures, riders and horses in wonderful primary colours. And this is all in a very unique powerful style, simple and very expressionistic. Benner managed to retain simplicity and wonderment in his work, although he went on developing far into old age.
'When I work with emotion, the result should mainly encourage what nature is. And I like cheerfulness most. It is of course all about the atmosphere of nature, but I want the painting to spark off clarity and cheerfulness.' (Gerrit Benner, Op Cit, www.dekunsten.net)
