This is a portrait of a peasant woman from the Achterhoek region, close to Mondrian's family's home in Winterswijk, to which he often returned during his studies at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. She can be identified by the simple round form of the bonnet she is wearing, which is typical of the area.
