Joseph White & Son were located in Earlsdon outside of Coventry and active from the late 19th until early 20th century. The firm specialized in the manufacture of deck watches and chronometers, specifically for the admiralty.

The present watch is a highly rare example, certainly made to special order for a distinguished client of the celebrated watchmaker, combining a high precision movement made in solid gold and a platinum case, both features seldom found in pocketwatches.
