FIRST EDITION. The sermons of St. Bernard, one of the most accomplished and influential preachers of the later Middle Ages, were popular with priests and young clerics. They are arranged here according to the ecclesiastical year, making them of particular value to preachers, as witnessed by the early monastic and clerical ownership extending into the 17th century. The type was first used in Fust and Schoeffer's 1462 Bible and was probably cut specially for it. Its numerous imitators testify to its wide influence. Corrections made in the printing shop on 1/7r and 12/8v correspond with the BL, BnF, Morgan and Bridwell library copies.
