Collation: A-K8 L10 (A1 blank, A2r [signed A1] Joachim of Fiore's prophecy, A4r [A"3"] Bonaventura text, D3v Fioretti, L4r rule of St. Francis, L6r testament, L7r colophon, L7v rubrics table, L10 blank). 90 leaves. 43 lines, double column. Type: 6:92G. Pinholes visible at outer corners. (Light marginal spotting, neat marginal tear in one leaf.) 18th-century Italian russia-backed pink boards, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Provenance: E.Ph. Goldschmidt, 1928 (cat. XIX, no. 166, £75) -- Countess Estelle Doheny (bookplate; purchased from Lathrop Harper for $375, 1934; sale Christie's NY, 22 October 1987, lot 112).
RARE: not in the British Library, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek or Bibliothèque nationale de France, and only one copy in America. Second edition of Bonaventura's life of St. Francis of Assisi and of the rule of the order. Bonaventura's was approved as the official biography of St. Francis. It is here joined by two other texts, the Fioretti, or "Little Flowers", giving legends and traditions pertaining to the early Franciscans, and the prophecy of Joachim of Fiore. Until the present copy was described for the Doheny sale in 1987, it was not recognised that the edition contains the important Fioretti. The Doheny catalogue also corrected the collation and format.
