Royal 2° (420 x 283mm). 30 WOODCUT MAPS ALL FINELY COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND (of 32, lacking 'Secunda Asie Tabula' and 'Tercia Asie Tabula') cut by Johannes of Armsheim after Nicolaus Germanus: one full-page and 29 double-page, all but five (world map, modern maps of Spain, France, Scandinavia, and the Holy Land) with letterpress text within 4-part woodcut hand-coloured border on rectos, 4th map of Africa with text on recto and verso, lacking all the text excepting the index leaf. (Staining throughout to top half of maps, very heavy to two maps affecting the colouring, 2 maps with light staining to lower half, 8 maps with margins strengthened on versos, five maps slightly trimmed affecting a few letters in margins, 3 maps with very minor repairs to lower fore-edges, 3 maps with very small neat repairs to central fold crease in margin at gutter, tiny hole to one map affecting about 4 letters of placenames, one map with tiny wormholes at gutter neatly repaired, 4 maps with lower fore-edges slightly clipped.) Mid 19th-century paper-covered boards and endpapers (worn, lacking backstrip). Provenance: five placenames entered or corrected in brown ink in a early hand to 'Qvarta Evrope Tabvla' -- 19th-century manuscript title to prelim.
A SPLENDIDLY COLOURED COPY OF THE FIRST ENLARGED EDITION; THE FIRST ATLAS PRINTED OUTSIDE ITALY; AND THE FIRST ATLAS ILLUSTRATED WITH WOODCUT MAPS. Its maps are the reworking of the Ptolemaic corpus by Nicolaus Germanus, a German cartographer whose reworkings survive in three recensions. The 1482 Ulm Ptolemy reproduces the third, revised recension, and thus represents 'Nicolaus's most mature work' (Campbell, Earliest Printed Maps, p.124). Johannes of Armsheim cut the woodblocks for the maps and signed his name at the top of the world map, making it 'the earliest datable printed map to bear a signature' (Campbell, p.137).
