Keith Haring (1958-1990) & LA II (b. 1967)
Property from the Estate of Dr. Sabra W Calland It was no secret that New York was the epicenter of the art universe in second-half of the twentieth century, but for those living outside the island access to art and artists was not always easy, even within the United States. The present lots from the Estate of Dr. Sabra W. Calland were acquired over the last thirty years by frequent trips to the Big Apple to visit exhibitions she had somehow found out about from within the confines of Indianapolis, where she worked as a pathologist and collected prints by Picasso and Miro. Sabra's tastes quickly became more avant garde when she began visiting New York in the early 1970's. She was impervious to any form of inhibition and adored meeting artists and gallerists like Holly Solomon, and Alan Sonfest who came to Sabra's home to create an installation in her living room in Indianapolis. In 1977 she moved to Fairfield County, finished her second residency in psychiatry and began buying conceptual and performance art by Cindy Sherman and Hannah Wilke, while the rest of the art world collected Pop and Color Field paintings. Sabra was a patron of the arts in many disciplines, though it was her love of art and building of her collection--both the relationships she formed with the artists, their gallerists and the actual works themselves--which triumphed over all else. The following selection of art ranging from painting to conceptual represents a perfect time capsule of the New York art world of the Seventies and Eighties from a collector with a keen sense of aesthetics and truly brilliant mind.
