Tokaji - from the 1860's Front label states "Tokaji from the 1860's" and each bottle is individually numbered. Back label states - "From the cool, damp cellars of a noted Country House in Southern England. Stored in the same cellars since the the vendor's family purchased the house in 1870 and according to notes and records found in the cellar, believed to date from the 1860's. Identified as Tokaji from the 19th Century ceramic bin labels and historical family knowledge. Recently analysed at an alcoholic strength of 14.44 by volume" Sold at Christie's, London on 6th December 2007. Label and back label in heavy hand-laid paper and newly re-waxed capsules - both label and capsule embossed with 'Vinum Originale Hungaricum'. The bottles are estimated to be of 75 cl. size or slightly larger and of slightly varying shapes; but basically are slope-shouldered 'burgundy' style bottles. Hand-blown with striated necks and fine string lips surmounting slender sloped necks. Levels are all good and vary between 6 to 8 cms below base of short original corks Tasting note - short, crumbly cork, pure amber gold colour with oily consistency. Aroma is sweet with hints of orange and apricot. Resinous and slightly nutty. Honeyed with fragrance of rose-hips. Touch of balsamic character with rich and lingering aftertaste.
