The present portfolio was produced by the Wiener Werkstätte circa 1905 to enclose drawings by Gustav Klimt which were acquired by the artist's most prominent patrons, August and Serena Lederer. When the portfolio was recovered from Alt Aussee by the Western Allies in 1948 and returned to the Lederer family, it contained 159 drawings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. The Wiener Werkstätte production community was formed out of the Vienna Secession in 1903, and the chief designers from this period were Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser.
