'I mean art is like God for every artist. In one way as an artist you have an equally suspect belief system as the church or any of the religions. So each piece in the show is like a piece of a puzzle or an aspect of a question that kind of daren't be asked directly, and only when you look at all the works together can you arrive at the boldness of the statement 'The Death of God', which then becomes a confirmation of life. It's more of a suspicion than a fact, or an unutterable truth...'

(Hirst, quoted in Damien Hirst: The Death of God. Towards a Better Understanding of a Life Without God Aboard the Ship of Fools, exh. cat., San Rafael 2006, pp. 13-14).
