The paintings were purchased from the artist in 1956-57 and 1961 during their stays in India and Bangadesh (then East Pakistan) when Ms. Robins developed a friendship with the artist. She worked as curator at the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri. She was an avid collector of Indian folk art and co-authored the Everyday Art of India published in 1968 in addition to many articles on Indian art.
