Property from the Estate of Renee S. Neu
Born in 1916 in Rome to a family of art dealers, Renee S. Neu studied art history and conservation at the Accademia di Belle Arti and the University of Rome, where she developed a passion for Italian art and design. After immigrating to the United States upon the outbreak of World War II, Neu became involved with promoting contemporary Italian art and curated several exhibitions that traveled across the country.
Neu served as Frank O'Hara's assistant from 1958 until his premature death in 1966. O'Hare was a focal point in the New York art and literary scene and was particularly influential in developing the curatorial mission of the Museum of Modern Art. With Neu working directly at his side at the MoMA, O'Hara curated some of the most important exhibitions of Post-War Abstraction.
Neu was an important promoter of Post-War Italian and American art throughout her life. From her early years in her native Italy and throughout her life in the United States, Neu befriended artists, meeting several of them through O'Hare, such as Norman Bluhm, Helen Frankenthaler and Joe Brainard.
