Star of Persia is a study for three of Frank Stella's well-known multiple series printed at Gemini G.E.L in 1967. Star of Persia I, Star of Persia II, and the Irving Blum Memorial Editions are particularly notable not only in design, but medium, demonstrating an innovative use of metallic inks. The six-chevron configuration of Star of Persia is derived from the Stella's Notched-V series of 1964, placing the present lot in direct context of the artist's paintings of the period. A culmination of the Notched-V series, Empress of India (1965), can be found in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
