Rectangular with rounded corners, the hinged cover centred with a watercolour on ivory miniature of Emperor Nicholas II, in the uniform of His Majesty's Life Guard Hussars, within paste-set surround surmounted by a crown and ribbon-twist with further paste and ribbon below, flanked by three interlaced green gold laurel wreaths centred by three old-cut pastes and a yellow gold arrow, on a translucent yellow-green sunburst guilloché enamelled ground within an acanthus-chased gold border, the sides and base of burnished yellow gold, the rose gold interior later engraved 'Presented by the Emperor Nicholas II. to Lord Carrington Lord Chamberlain. who was sent by the Queen to attend the funeral of the Emperor Alexander III. and the marriage of the Emperor Nicholas II. St. Petersburg. 1894.' on the cover and 'Presented by The Marquis of Lincolnshire K.G. to Major Viscount Lewisham Staffordshire Yoemanry on his leaving for the Front 27 November 1915', everted semi-circular thumb-piece, marked inside cover and base

Presented by Emperor Nicholas II in 1894 to Charles Robert Carrington (1843-1928), 3rd Baron Carrington, Lord Chamberlain to Queen Victoria of England.
Given to his third daughter, Lady Ruperta Wynn-Carington (1883-1963) and her husband Lieutenant-Colonel William Legge, 7th Earl of Dartmouth (1881-1958), then to their daughter, Lady Elizabeth Legge (1908-2000). By descent to the present owner.
