Huang Binhong's masterpieces have been highly regarded by collectors, with different periods of his creation revealing his different talents, as well as his unique views of nature.
The current four landscape paintings were created in 1926, during Huang's "second period of creation", when he constantly travelled to seek inspiration. A curious and thirsty traveller, Huang journeyed to Huangshan, E'mei, Guilin, Qingcheng and Hong Kong, studying his surroundings and absorbing the essence of each place. Through thoughtful observation, Huang brought life and energy to modern landscape paintings, following his own dictum that "since nature gives so much to man, we must make its representation beautiful".?
Originally the first local football club in Hong Kong, the Chinese Football Team, established in 1904 (later named the South China Athletic Association Football Team in 1908), went on to win fourteen straight years. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Huang Binhong, along with other masters, put together this painting and calligraphy set as a gift to then head of the association, Cai Jianyong. Having been in the Cai family for over eighty years, this piece is not only historically significant but also carries much sentimental value.
