FU BAOSHI (1904-1965)
LOTS 2752-2753 FORMER COLLECTION OF PROFESSOR WANG BOQI The dedication to Boqi refers to Professor Wang Boqi (1909-1961), a famous Chinese legal scholar. Hailing from the same small town of Yixing in Jiangsu Province, Wang and Xu Beihong were acquaintances early in their lives. Xu Beihong's first wife was actually Mrs. Wang's distant aunt, and they both studied in Europe in the 1930's. It was through Xu's introduction that Professor Wang became friends with Fu Baoshi. Professor Wang graduated from the Law School of Soochow University in 1931. He immediately went to Paris University in France to pursue an advanced degree in law and returned to China after completing his doctorate degree in law in 1936. During WWII he was a professor and later the Chairman of the Department of Law at National Yunnan University in Kunming. At the end of WWII, he returned to Nanjing to work in the Ministry of Education. After moving to Taiwan in 1949, he worked in the Ministry of Justice and took a full-time job as a Professor of Law at National Taiwan University in 1953, while also teaching part-time at his alma mater, Soochow University. Professor Wang dedicated his life to education and publishing. He published many books and essays and was particularly interested in researching the philosophy of law. The dedication of this painting by Fu Baoshi stated that it was done in Nanjing, 1948, dedicated to Bo-Qi. It was believed that they socialized with one another quite frequently then the three of them were all living in Nanjing after the war.. Both of these paintings were given to his two sons in the 1950's.
