We are grateful to Dr. Jan Kelch for confirming the attribution of this painting to Simon de Vlieger. It will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist. This work, or a variant, is also included in L.J. Bol, Die hollndische Marinemalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, Braunschweig, 1973, p. 117 as by Hans Goderis and signed 'H.G.' Differences between the two compositions can be found in the shoreline in the left foreground and sails of the two boats on the right.
